Come see Food, Inc.!

Kelsey and I will be showing Robert Kenner’s documentary, Food, Inc.,  on JMU’s campus.  It will be tomorrow, MONDAY APRIL 26th at 7pm in Maury Hall room 205.

It’s a really great film that shows what is “behind the  curtain” of the food industry.  It has some really shocking facts that everyone should know!!! You’ll definitely leave questioning your current eating habits!!!

Here’s the official trailer of the film…

Also, we’ve put up flyers around campus and passed some out at ISAT and on the Commons! Hopefully you’ve picked one up and can come : )

We look forward to seeing you there!!!

Cheers,

Katlyn

Harrisonburg Farmer’s Market Now Open!

Last Saturday, April 3, 2010 the Harrisonburg Farmer’s Market had a spring opening event with live music and great food! I attended the event and it was absolutely amazing!!! There were so many different vendors and everyone there was very interesting to interact with.  I left with lots of homegrown goodies to cook with : )  I found this video on the Harrisonburg Farmer’s Market website…it’s a video from their winter market, but it still gives you another look at what the Harrisonburg Farmer’s Market is like.  They interview the President of the Farmer’s Market which is pretty interesting – he’s just a normal guy! I hope it helps you get motivated to go to see all the neat and interesting things…I think it’s pretty persuasive : ) The tagline is “Know your farmer, Know your food.” I think that’s great! They even talk about it in the video…that you can go around and ask the farmer where his farm is and what farming practices he uses!!! SO NEAT! I’m pretty sure if the food at the supermarket could talk, we’d all be appalled at what they had to say about how they were grown.  So take a look and I hope you come out to the next Farmer’s Market!

(Harrisonburg Winter Farmer’s Market) For some reason it won’t let me put the clip right on here, so until I figure it out, there is the link!

The hours for the Harrisonburg Farmer’s Market are from 7am – 1pm on Tuesdays and Saturdays!

“Let’s Retake Our Plates”

My mom put this fabulous video on her FaceBook today, and as soon as I saw it I knew I had to share it with everyone!

It’s just under 2 minutes so take a quick look…

I really like how simple it is.  Obviously it was a video made for/by Whole Foods (which is a GREAT company by the way – you should definitely shop there if you have one in your home town) but it can definitely relate to the entire Buy Fresh, Buy Local initiative.  We SHOULD be questioning where our food comes…it’s not safe anymore to just assume that its okay and free of chemicals/preservatives/antibiotics that will only harm us and the planet in the future.  “Retaking our plates” is such a great message to get people to stop buying the things in the grocery stores that aren’t good for you and to get people out to local farms and Farmer’s Markets to buy fresh, organic, and local foods.  I love that there aren’t even any words in this clip…just pictures of everyday people doing everyday things.  You can see the farmer and his farm…you can see the mom shopping…you can see the food on the plate…it definitely makes you think about what you’re putting into your body and how you can change that if you’re not sure where your food is coming from.  So next time you’re about to eat, take the time to think about what it is you’re eating, where it came from, and if you can find it somewhere else (like the Harrisonburg Farmer’s Market!).

Buy Fresh, Buy Local in Harrisonburg!

Hello everyone! I found this really interesting clip on YouTube where a local doctor goes to the Harrisonburg Farmer’s Market and talks to a few vendors and just shows viewers what to expect.  It shows just how much fun the Farmer’s Market is!!! You can meet such interesting people and buy fresh food from local vendors to help not only your health, but the planet’s health and the local economy : ) Sounds pretty perfect to me! I like the opening phrase – “In a Spirit of Community.”  The Harrisonburg Farmer’s Market is such a great way to get involved in the community as well.  Enjoy!

Her campus…

I don’t know if any of you have heard about “Her Campus – A Collegiette’s Guide To Life.”  According to their website, they are an online magazine for college women.  They establish “branches” at colleges and universities just like they have done here at JMU.  “Her Campus serves as a hub for everything college women need to know about today, with articles on Style, Health, Love, DormLife, Career, World, and much more.”  Anyways, while I was on FaceBook the other day, one of my friends had posted a link to an article that she had written for Her Campus which led me to find this awesome article on the JMU Her Campus about the Harrisonburg Farmer’s Market.  I think it is absolutely GREAT that someone wrote about this for Her Campus.  This can get college women the information they need to know about buying fresh and local here in the Valley.  This is becoming a relatively popular website so this information will hopefully be getting lots of views!!! The author is Rachel Petersen, a student here at JMU, and she really does write a great article.  She starts off by asking the reader questions about how they buy their food and gets you intrigued into what she has to say.  She tells her audience where the local farmer’s market is (since most JMU students don’t know) and then tells you that you can buy more than just vegetables there! SHOCKER, i know : )

Click here to get to Rachel’s article on Her Campus!

I also didn’t know that the Harrisonburg Farmer’s Market had it’s own website until I read the Her Campus website.  So after reading, I went and checked it out.  (Click here to take a look!) I really love this website.  I wish more people at JMU and the Harrisonburg community knew about this! On the very front page it says “Fresh, Healthy, and Locally Produced – The mission of the Harrisonburg Farmer’s Market is to provide the public with easy access to fresh, healthy, locally produced agricultural goods and crafts of the highest quality while assisting local and regional farmers and other producers in directly marketing their products to the local consumer base.”  LOVE LOVE LOVE that mission statement.  That is what it is allll about.  The website is awesome it tells you where they are located and the times that they are there during the different seasons.  It goes on to tell you the history of the Farmer’s Market here in the Valley and there is also an events page!  Looks like there is going to be a really entertaining spring kick-off event coming up soon on April 3rd! I’ll post something soon about that! My absolute favorite part about the website is the “Vendors” section – you can go there to see all of the different vendors that come to the Farmer’s Market and see what they sell/how they make it/how they grow it which I think is great!!! So go check it out – I enjoyed it and I know you will too!

Cheers,

Katlyn

“Do Your Part”

I found this video on YouTube that definitely should have been in one of the first few posts I did, but I didn’t think there was any harm in posting it now : ) It’s a really short clip about “doing your part.”  I really like it…it’s such a simple yet great way to get people involved.  The minute long clip gives viewers information about WHERE to find local produce and the benefits to both you and the rest of the world if you buy local produce.  I think its just brief enough where people wouldn’t mind watching it since it isn’t very long AND it gives so much helpful information that viewers can use as a basis to get involved, or “do their part.”

I absolutely LOVE the tagline that goes along with the video clip as well.  “DO YOUR PART” is just so great and says so much.  Everyone should be helping a hand, and “doing their part” when it comes to our planet.

Enjoy : )

LOOOOOK!

Please go check out this website… (Buy Fresh, Buy Local)
On this site you can search for the type of food you want in a specific area of Virginia! Really cool!
